So you are thinking about owning a Utonagan. Well if you can get to the bottom of this page and you still want one then the Ute might just be the dog for you!
The Ute is NOT a dog for first time owners, nor for owners used to small breeds only.
The Ute is NOT a dog that is happy to be left alone. They need constant attention and if left alone for long periods they can develop Separation Anxiety. This may result in destructive behaviour and you may come home to find anything and everything has been chewed, no matter how precious it was to you! They are excellent escapologists, including being able to open doors and gates etc so nothing is safe from them!
The Ute is NOT a dog for people who like a nice garden. They love to dig, and not just small discreet holes, in fact the Ute would be well suited to the building trade as an excavator for digging foundations! They will also eat most plants.
The Ute is NOT a guard dog. They are far too friendly and sociable. Please don’t think of owning a Ute if your sole intention is to ‘impress’ people with your ‘wolf’.
The Ute is NOT suitable for people who like a nice tidy house. They moult heavily and you will find hairs everywhere even if you hoover several times a day! They love to chew and nothing is safe from them, especially socks!
The Ute is NOT a dog for people who want to travel a lot with them. They can be prone to travel sickness, even on short journeys.
The Ute is NOT for people who holiday a lot. They don’t suit being in kennels and can get distressed.
The Ute is NOT a dog that handles change well. A move of house can prove very distressing to them and can trigger stress related problems such as destructive behaviour.
The Ute doesn’t reach full adult maturity until 3 to 4years old and therefore remains a pup in the head even after its body has reached adult proportions which can cause problems especially when it decides to romp around the house in true puppy style leaving a trail of destruction behind!
The Ute is good with children BUT because of their size they can easily knock small children over without meaning to.
The Ute can adapt to most situations, if you put the time and effort in to training them, and they will reward you with a lifetime of loyal companionship and amusement. They are unlike any other breed of dog. The Ute has a way of getting under your skin and they can look at you and appear to know exactly what you are thinking.
The Ute likes to ‘talk’ they will “woo woo” at you any time they feel you need telling about something, they also love to howl so unless you are on good terms with your neighbours don’t leave them alone for long.
The Ute is a big clumsy, loveable and friendly clown of a dog. They need firm but fair handling and are extremely intelligent. They are easy to train if you keep the training sessions short and fun as they do get bored easily.
The Ute requires a lot of patience and understanding. They will often cause you great stress but they will also reward you with some very funny moments.
So do you still want to share you life with one of these truly wonderful dogs?
