TUA-The Utonagan Association

ABOUT US

We are a group of like-minded people - owners, breeders and non-owners - who share a genuine love of, and interest in, the Utonagan; a truly amazing and stunning breed.

The Utonagan Association was established in November 2007 because of a mutual desire to safeguard the future of this breed.  As representatives of the Utonagan, we intend to take care of the dogs’ interests in an ethical manner.  They deserve nothing less.

We are aware that there have been allegations of past breeders introducing other than the founder breeds into our dogs’ lines.  Although we have some highly experienced members on our committee, we were not involved then so we cannot ratify these statements.

However, whether true or not, these dogs are here today and we love them for who and what they are.  By continually researching pedigrees, lines and health issues, together with the introduction of strict health screening and DNA profiling, we aim to uncover the truth.

Our main concerns are the dogs we have now, whatever their history, and the dogs we will produce in the future.  We aim to eliminate as many health problems as possible and dramatically reduce the occurrence of others where possible, by a process of carefully selected breeding programmes and precise documentation.

Obviously this is a long and ongoing process, which will take time to achieve.  We don't expect fast results but prefer to take as long as is necessary to make the correct decisions.  This will be achieved by the use of research based evidence, implementation of a sound code of ethics, responsible breeding practices and ensuring that there is no scope for doubt surrounding anything done from this point onwards.
